About the Annual PSBIM Review Course
The Annual Review in Internal Medicine is the premier review course for the PSBIM written certifying examination. It was conceptualized by Dr. Agnes D. Mejia – then chair of the Philippine Specialty Board in Internal Medicine (PSBIM) – to improve the passing rate of examinees. In 2009, when Dr. Mejia was chair of the UP-PGH Department of Medicine, the first review course was conducted. The review course featured a faculty consisting of four past PSBIM chairs: Dr. Agnes Mejia (Nephrology), Dr. Mediadora Saniel (Infectious Diseases), Dr. Joselito Chavez (Pulmonary Medicine), and Dr. Valorie Fullon-Chan (Medical Oncology), among other consultants who were frontrunners in their respective subspecialties.
The first course had humble beginnings – registering ninety-nine participants and was held in the PGH Dietary Hall. Since then, it has grown in number and scope, attracting residents and former exam-takers all over the country. In 2009, the review course received a continuing medical education grant from LRI Therapharma and in 2012, the venue was moved to the Unilab Bayanihan Center in Kapitolyo, Pasig. The change was necessary given the growing demands of the participants. Last year, due to the constraints imposed by the pandemic, the annual review course shifted to online platform nevertheless, 590 physicians registered – a record number for the course.
The review course takes pride in maintaining a passing rate higher than the national average. It has also produced topnotchers each year and has consistently featured lecturers with health education expertise – including former PSBIM chairpersons. It has kept abreast with revisions in references, and has incorporated clinical updates in the curriculum.
The review course supports the Sagip Buhay Medical Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides financial support for life-saving medications and procedures to indigent patients at the Philippine General Hospital.
