UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES-COLLEGE OF MEDICINE-PHILIPPINE GENERAL HOSPITAL
The Medical Oncology Division, University of the Philippines – College of Medicine/ Philippine General Hospital, Manila, started in 1980 as one of the many sub-specialty Division’s of the Department of Medicine, providing service to the Philippine General Hospital patients and training to the medical residents and the College of Medicine students. It is the 1st Medical Oncology Section in the Philippines.
The Division’s 1st Chief was Dr. Bernardino M. Agustin, under the Chairship of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Ernesto O. Domingo.
In 1982, the Medical Oncology Fellowship training program was started & developed by Dr. Antonio H. Villalon. With this fellowship program came the section’s research endeavors. This is the 1st Post-residency Medical Oncology Fellowship training program in the Philippines. From this University and Training Center came the founders of the Training Centers of Jose R Reyes Memorial Medical Center (Dr. Corazon A. Ngelangel), Veterans Memorial Medical Center and University of Sto Tomas Medical Center (Dr. Valorie Fullon-Chan), St. Luke’s Medical Center, and National Kidney & Transplant Institute (Dr. Gloria Cristal-Luna). From this University and Training Center also came the founders of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (such as Drs. Reuben Guerrero, Emilio Abello, Derogracias Custodio, Bernardo Agustin, Antonio H. Villalon) and many Presidents of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO). It was then during the Presidency of Dr. Gloria Cristal-Luna that the accreditation of the medical oncology training center of the Philippines began under PSMO, with Dr. Corazon A. Ngelangel as the Chair of the Committee; it was during the Presidency of Dr. Jorge Ignacio (also an alumnus of UPCM-PGH Medical Oncology Training Center) that the accreditation of the clinical Oncology (medical oncology) training centers (among other oncology training specialties with emphasis on oncology and multidisciplinary cancer care) of the Philippines begun under the Philippine Society of Oncologists (PSO), with Dr. Marie Warren as the Chair of the Committee.
In 1999, inspired by the College of Medicine Dean Ramon L. Arcadio and the Department of Medicine Chair Dr. Clemente Amante, the Medical Oncology Section led by Dr. Corazon A Ngelangel proposed the Masteral Program in Medical Oncology (MS Clinical Medicine)/ Master of Clinical Medicine (Medical Oncology), a 1st of the internal medicine sub-specialty training courses and the clinical residency-fellowship training courses, to be developed as such. The vision is for clinical specialty residency masteral’s graduate degree programs and clinical subspecialty fellowship doctoral degree programs.
The Presidential Advisory Council (University of the Philippines) and the University Council (UP-Manila) approved the Master of Science in Clinical Medicine (Medical Oncology) and the Master of Clinical Medicine (Medical Oncology) graduate degree programs on 18 July 2002 and 27 July 2002, respectively.
The Medical Oncology Training program has the clinics and didactics of the 2-year fellowship program aligned to local and global curriculum standards plus core and major baccalaureate degree courses from the University of the Philippines-College of Medicine.
